Deep Roots Transformational Gardening - Oak Park Library - Saturday, February 7, 2026

Hands-on event features Deep Roots’ compost-based method, native plants, and simple “milk jug” winter sowing for bigger home harvests.

Deep Roots Project and BEAT Roots, an intergenerational gardening group at Brooks Middle School, are teaming up for a free, interactive event on Saturday, February 7, 2026, 1-4 PM, at the Oak Park Main Library.

This hands-on event features Deep Roots’ compost-based method, native plants, and simple “milk jug” winter sowing for bigger home harvests

At the heart of the afternoon is a featured demonstration of Deep Roots Project’s Transformational Gardening method—an innovative, science-based approach that uses 100% microbe- and nutrient-rich compost instead of traditional soil blends, enriched with worm castings and smart raised-bed design, to build living soil and significantly increase yields in small urban and suburban gardens.

The program will take place in the Veterans Room from 1:00–4:00 PM and is designed so participants can drop in for a portion or stay for the entire experience. Although the event is free, RSVPs are strongly encouraged, as space in the Veterans Room is limited. Use the sign-up button below.

The afternoon begins with a relaxed meet-and-greet, where attendees can connect with gardeners of all ages and learn how BEAT Roots and Deep Roots Project are bringing youth, adults, and elders together around food, soil, and climate action.

Deep Roots Project will then present its Transformational Gardening method in more detail—showing how compost-rich soil, worm castings, and well-designed raised beds can boost harvests, reduce work, and fit into even very small yards. The presentation will also touch on how surrounding food beds with selected native plants supports bees, butterflies, and other pollinators that make abundant fruit and vegetable yields possible.

To close the program, participants will dive into a hands-on winter sowing “milk jug” workshop, where they’ll learn how to use repurposed plastic jugs as mini-greenhouses to start hardy flowers and vegetables outdoors. The session will cover choosing seeds, preparing containers, and caring for seedlings in early spring—giving attendees practical tools they can use right away at home.

“Our partnership with BEAT Roots is about more than gardening,” said Briana Villarrubia, Partner Outreach and Funding Coordinator with Deep Roots Project. “It’s about bringing generations together to build healthier soil, stronger communities, and more resilient local food systems—one small garden at a time.”

A BEAT Roots coordinator added, “Young people are eager to take climate and food issues into their own hands. Working alongside older gardeners gives our students real skills, real relationships, and the sense that they can make a difference right where they live.”

Recharge Your Soil with Microbe-Rich Compost this Fall!

Now that we are getting into Fall, it's time for one of the most important tasks for your fall garden – recharging your soil!

Maintain a Robust & Resilient Ecosystem

Now that we are in September, it's time to begin planning the most important task for your fall garden – recharging your soil with fresh compost! Healthy soil is the foundation for a thriving garden, and now is the perfect time to cover your raised beds with a 2-inch layer of fresh, microbe/nutrient-rich compost. This compost is the same high-quality product we use to fill our new raised beds. It’s teeming with beneficial microorganisms that nourish your plants and build a robust, resilient ecosystem in your garden.

Get More Details

Why Spread Compost in Fall?

Adding our top quality compost now ensures that your soil is full of essential nutrients and microbes by the time spring planting arrives. Plus, this replenishes the organic matter your soil needs to keep performing at its best, growing bigger, healthier crops year after year. Whether you’re preparing your beds for winter or planting a fall garden, don’t miss this vital step!. You can also spread a layer of compost in the spring.

Now is the time to plant a fall garden

In September it’s best to plant seedlings instead of seeds since the fall growing season starts in August. Good Earth Greenhouse in River Forest, other garden centers and farmers markets often sell fall seedlings.

Planting a Fall Garden

Early Fall: Prepare for the Final Harvest

As fall approaches, your garden enters its final stages. Here’s how to wrap up the growing season with a successful harvest:

  1. Harvest warm-season vegetables: It’s time to gather tomatoes, peppers, squashes, and other warm-season vegetables before the first frost. Keep an eye on the weather and harvest tender crops as temperatures drop.

  2. Harvesting squash: Harvest some squash when they are light beige or slightly green (summer squash). Or wait until they are a warm peach color (winter squash). The winter squash skin is tough and can be stored indoors for 5-6 months in a cool location.

  3. Plant fall crops: Fall is also a great time to plant cool-season crops again. Spinach, kale, and carrots can thrive in cooler temperatures, giving you fresh produce well into the fall.

Late Fall: Garden Clean-Up and Winter Preparation

As the season comes to a close, it’s important to prepare your garden for winter. This will ensure a healthy and productive start next spring:

  1. Final harvest: Harvest any remaining vegetables, especially root crops like carrots and potatoes. For plants that won’t survive the frost, it’s time to cut them down.

  2. Clean and store tools: Clean and sharpen your garden tools before storing them for winter. This will prolong their life and ensure they’re ready for next year.

  3. Apply compost: Spread a 2” layer of compost over your beds. This protects the soil from winter erosion and adds nutrients that will break down and enrich the soil during the colder months.

  4. Plant garlic in fall October 15 to 30 for a bountiful harvest in July. It sprouts in spring and is harvested in July. Plant the biggest and healthiest organic garlic cloves you can find at a farmers market since the variety is best for our local climate. Planting garlic blog post.

  5. Plant spinach seeds between November 15 and 30 for an early spring crop, and after you apply the 2” of compost. But don’t cover with mulch or leaves that will block the tiny sprouts from emerging in the spring. Spinach planting blog post.

  6. Avoid leaching of nutrients. Cover the bed with fallen leaves or landscape cloth to protect soil from snow and rain over the winter. But remove the leaf cover and cloth March 1 (or earlier) so spinach seeds can germinate and perennials like green onions can sprout.

  7. Frost protection: Use row covers ((light weight white garden fabric) to extend harvest of spinach, lettuce, and kale well into November. Row cover comes in 3 protection levels.

  8. Planting a cover crop is optional. Cover crops are an effective way to improve soil health, suppress weeds, and provide other benefits to a raised bed food garden. By choosing the right cover crop for your growing conditions, planting at the right time, and following good maintenance practices, you can enjoy a healthier and more productive garden. See our blog post: Cover Crops in Raised Beds.

Microbe-Rich Compost Is the Key to Success

Whether you're replenishing your existing beds or filling new ones, our microbe/nutrient-rich compost is your key to gardening success. It's made at a local farm with a “thermophilic” (heating generating) process the explodes the healthy microbe populations that your soil needs to grow healthy plants. Plus, it's OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) certified organic!

Edible Garden Walk Thank You!

Last Sunday, something truly special happened in our community—the very first Deep Roots Edible Garden Walk! And thanks to YOU, it was a joyful, vibrant, and inspiring success.

Last Sunday, something truly special happened in our community—the very first Deep Roots Edible Garden Walk! And thanks to YOU, it was a joyful, vibrant, and inspiring success.

Over 80 guests joined us for this self-guided tour of five beautiful local gardens—each one grown using the Deep Roots Project’s innovative regenerative method. From edible landscapes to abundant raised beds, these gardens weren’t just a feast for the eyes—they were a living example of what’s possible when we grow food in 100% microbe-rich compost, not soil blends, and nourish our plants with nutrient-dense worm castings, not chemicals.

The tour began at the Deep Roots demonstration garden at Estelle’s home, where guests picked up a brochure and map, then set off on a sunny stroll through gardens bursting with life, color, and flavor. Along the way, they saw first-hand how our method leads to less work, no tilling, no chemicals—and more food!

A Huge Thank You

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us, both as guests and as volunteers. Your enthusiasm, curiosity, and kindness filled the day with great energy. And to our amazing volunteers—thank you for helping with setup, guiding guests, and making sure everything ran smoothly.

Let’s Keep the Conversation Growing

The day ended beautifully with an informal discussion in Estelle’s backyard, where gardeners and guests gathered to share ideas, ask questions, and connect. It was a fitting close to a day centered on community, sustainability, and the joy of growing food together.

Want to relive the excitement or learn more about what we do?

Original Invite and Details Here

We hope this is just the beginning of a new annual tradition. Until then, let’s keep digging deeper, growing stronger, and feeding our communities—one garden at a time.

With gratitude and green thumbs,
The Deep Roots Project Team
